Umbraco 7: End of Life
Only a few months to go before Umbraco 7 is no longer supported by Umbraco HQ (September 2023). So if you have a site that uses Umbraco 7, now is the time to plan a migration.

What does this mean for your website?
That's a good question. Your Umbraco 7 website will no longer be supported by the headquarters as of September 2023, and therefore we cannot take care of your website either. This means that it will no longer be supported with security patches and we no longer recommend hosting websites on this version. We therefore recommend migrating your website to the latest Umbraco version.
Why End of Life?
Umbraco 7 was first released in 2013 and is now classified as legacy software. But it is a version that is now almost 10 years old, which is a very long time in this industry and is based on technology that is no longer up to current standards. Therefore, Umbraco has made an EOL (end of life) decision for version 7 to have the resources to fully invest in new technology.

Is it possible to upgrade from Umbraco 7 to 10 or 11?
No, this unfortunately does not work. Starting with Umbraco 10, .NET Core is used, a completely different technology, which means there is no upgrade path between versions. Instead, a migration takes place. Depending on the size and complexity of the website, certain features and content may be rebuilt in the new solution, or alternatively built from scratch if this is most time-saving.
By the way, this is an excellent time to consider a new Web design or user interface (UI). Use this time to make improvements in user experience and conversion rate optimization.

Will your Umbraco 7 website continue to work after September 2023?
Absolutely, although then you have to worry about data security and risk. We understand that it can involve a lot of work and resources in the form of time and money to switch to Umbraco 10 or 11, especially if you are happy with your website as it is now and see no need to revamp it. The idea of continuing with version 7 after its end of life may seem like the easiest and cheapest solution, but it's not something that either we or Umbraco recommend. Here's why:
- No ongoing support - no security updates, increased risks of breaches
- Deteriorated performance - this also affects your SEO ranking
- It is more expensive - continuing to develop and manage old technology involves higher costs
- In the long run, the site will continue to deteriorate over time

Should I migrate from Umbraco 7 to Umbraco 10/11?
It is wise to migrate your website to the latest main version of Umbraco. We will always recommend migrations, support and continuous improvements to get the most out of your website. This means you will have access to new features and remain secure and supported.
